Discogram

A Discogram is a type of injection where dye is injected into the disc.   It's usually followed by an x-ray and then a CT-Scan.  This test can be helpful in getting more structural information about the disc then MRI can achieve.   It can also be used to see if a disc is causing pain.  There are three parts to the test:

  • The Injection-A needle is directed at the disc in question using a fluoroscope. Dye is injected into the disc. Tell the doctor if you've ever been allergic to the type of dyes used for x-ray.

  • Pain Rating-The doctor will ask you if the injection produces the same type of pain that you usually have. It's important to be as honest and concise as possible.

  • CT Scan-This is done next so that any disc problems can be seen.
