Strengthening Multifidus and Transversus Muscles

How do you strengthen these muscles? While a very specific exercise set can help, the multifidus and transversus are very deep and can be difficult to feel. The best method for retraining of these spinal stabilizers is to use ultrasound imaging (not therapeutic ultrasound, but rather the same type of diagnostic ultrasound that's used to "see" babies in the womb). This technology allows the patient to visualize the muscles and then learn how to isolate them.

Our program is as follows:
Step 1-Identification of Transversus and Deep Multifidus via ultrasound imaging.
Step 2-Ultrasound imaging biofeedback to allow patients to isolate these muscles.
Step 3-Adding in functional activities with ultrasound imaging to ensure spinal stability.
Step 4-Testing and training pre-contraction of these stabilizers on Computerized Dynamic Posturography.
Step 5-Home program with increasing difficult functional activities.
