A common problem in patients with neck and upper back pain is posture. The muscles in the front part of the chest become tight, while the muscles in the upper back become overworked. The spine also loses it's normal ability to distribute weight evenly due to this forward position.

In this picture, notice how the back is straight and the patient is able to easily maintain this position. In this picture, the patient is seated forward. The shoulders are rounded and the chest muscles are tight. The upper back muscles are overworked. The muscles at the base of the skull can spasm causing a headache.

How can I avoid overworking my upper back muscles?
