Spinal Anatomy

Anatomy can be very hard to understand.  My favorite author in medical school published a series of books where anatomy was made easier with cartoon characters and a lot of creativity.  A few years ago, I began to draw the spinal dogs as a way to educate my patients about their spine.

The facet joints are in the back of the spine where the paw of the dog on top steps on the ear of the dog on the bottom...
The nerve root exits just under the arm pit of the dog on top...
The dog on top sleeps on a bed which is the disc...
The vertebra or vertebral body is the body of the dog...
The dogs will fight to protect the spinal cord...
The dogs have a big piece of duct tape on their butts...
