X-rays are the single most common test performed due to a whiplash injury.  They are a great way to look for fractures, arthritis, and the like.  They don't show soft-tissue injuries, the most common problem.  They can show a straightening of the neck bones.  This finding is due to spasm in the muscles that get injured in the front of the neck.  If you've been told you have straightening, you may want to try the towel roll trick, a treatment that can help with the pain this syndrome can cause.

If you have clicking or popping in your neck since the accident, you should get flexion-extension x-rays.
