Stephen P. Schmitz PhD
Dr.
Stephen Schmitz received his Ph.D. in 1985 and then completed a prestigious two
year postdoctoral fellowship position in Clinical Neuropsychology at the
University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver studying with Dr. Robert
Heaton. Dr. Schmitz is currently the Clinical Director of The Brain and Behavior
Clinic, an assessment and treatment facility with three offices throughout the
state of Colorado.
He is a Board Member and serves on the Executive Committee of the Brain Injury
Association of Colorado and he sits on the Board of Directors of the Spinal
Injury Foundation. His research interests and publications are focused in the
areas of investigations into intelligence, localization of brain functions,
Alzheimer’s disease, and the efficacy of psychostimulant medications in the
treatment of traumatic brain injury.
Dr. Schmitz’ clinical emphasis is in the area of traumatic brain injury, with a
particular expertise in mild traumatic brain injury. He has developed a Sports
Concussion Management Program currently utilized by 28 high schools in Colorado.
He has considerable experience and is a meticulous researcher in forensic
matters involving a claimed brain injury. He is called upon equally by
plaintiffs and the defense, both as a consultant and a retained expert. He has
been accepted as an expert in the field of Neuropsychology in Federal and
District courts and works on civil litigation, medical malpractice, criminal
liability and competence, and Worker’s Compensation cases involving suspected
brain injury.
