Sean S. Kohles, PhD - Bioengineer
Dr.
Kohles is a Bioengineer in Portland, Oregon, and joined the SIF Board of
Directors in 2007. He is as a Research Associate Professor of Mechanical &
Materials Engineering at Portland State University where he directs the
Reparative Bioengineering Laboratory in the Northwest Center for Engineering,
Science & Technology. In addition, he is an Adjunct Associate Professor of
Surgery at the Oregon Health & Science University. Dr. Kohles is the Director of
Kohles Bioengineering, an independent, consulting/research entity.
Before
arriving in Portland in 2001, he was a joint faculty member at Worcester
Polytechnic Institute, the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and Tufts
University School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Kohles has published over 120
journal and conference papers in the broad areas of biomaterials, tissue, and
cellular biomechanical engineering with applications in spinal and joint
regenerative medicine. His research is supported by the National Institutes of
Health and the National Science Foundation.
He is an
active member a number of professional societies including the Orthopaedic
Research Society, the Biomedical Engineering Society, the American Society of
Mechanical Engineers, and the American Society of Biomechanics. These
memberships include service on the Editorial Boards for the Journal of
Biomechanics and the Annals of Biomedical Engineering. He completed a doctoral
degree in Bioengineering and BS/MS degrees in Engineering Mechanics all at the
University of Wisconsin-Madison.
