I hope to give some insight into how my involvement with the Spinal Injury Foundation started, who I am and why I think the Spinal Injury Foundation is a much needed solution for patients and professionals alike. I serve as Executive Director at the pleasure of the executive board and my assignments evolve with the growth of our Foundation.

My involvement with SIF started as a patient desperate for information. My life was dramatically altered in a motor vehicle crash that impacted every area of our lives. One moment my husband and I were valued professionals and the next we were patients in need of multiple back and neck surgeries and in my case cognitive rehab. The answers provided by professionals seemed brief and inconclusive even to a damaged brain. The Spinal Injury Foundation and Whiplash 101 web sites helped me to make sense of what was happening from a medical standpoint. The sites also provide great rehab exercises and survival tips.

One night I sensed strongly that God was going to bring me answers so that I could transform my self from victim to solution provider. That night there was an email sent by Dr Centeno, SIF’s medical Director. He invited people to apply for a convention scholarship with the understanding that if they were chosen they would be willing to volunteer with SIF as a patient advisory board. Dr Centeno granted my husband and I a scholarship and the adventure began!

It is a privilege for me to work with Dr. Centeno, Dr Freeman and the dedicated professionals who make up the Spinal Injury Foundation. The foundation provides education, research and advocacy that is deeply needed on an international level and I am honored to be a small part of creating history with SIF.

Refuse to let other people define your boundaries and enforce your limitations. The seeds of greatness are on the inside of you and they are waiting to be birthed. Hold unto your flexibility and sense of humor…you will need it on the ride of life! It is seldom a smooth ride but you can be the driver. There will be falls along the way but the difference between a success and a failure is choosing to get up one more time in what ever way you can! Your opportunity is waiting…go and meet it!
